is a 26-episode anime series created by Sunrise, loosely based on the manga by Takehito Ito.Bandai Entertainment and ZRO Limit Productions produced the English adaptation of the series and it was aired on Cartoon Network, albeit edited for brevity and content. An unedited English version also exists on VHS (with Dubbed English or English Subtitled format, but is now out of print) and DVD (English/Japanese with English subtitles). It is distributed in the US by Bandai Entertainment.
The Angel Links television series is set in the same universe, and two characters cross over.
Synopsis
The show follows the exploits of Gene Starwind, an outlaw in space, a century and a half after humans developed faster-than-light spacecraft. In the context of the series, an outlaw is simply an independent person with no major governmental loyalties, as opposed to a criminal. Outlaw Star takes the characters from the original manga but has a completely different story.
Gene, along with his 11-year old business associate and hacker Jim Hawking, runs a small jack-of-all-trades business on the backwater planet Sentinel III. After the two take a job as bodyguards for a mysterious outlaw, they find themselves the owners of a highly advanced prototype spacecraft, the XGP15A-II, later named the Outlaw Star, and the caretakers of a highly human-like android named Melfina who is mysteriously tied to the ship. Through the course of the series, the crew grows to include the assassin "Twilight" Suzuka and Aisha Clan Clan, a Ctarl-Ctarl.
The show is mainly episodic in nature, combining action, suspense, and comedy. Towards the end of series, the storyline concerns the quest for the Galactic Leyline, a mythical "treasure" hidden in the galaxy.
At the end of each episode, the credits role while art renditions of futuristic scenes and young women, who have absolutly no relevence to the story, are shown.
Characters
- Born on Earth, Gene Starwind developed a fear of space flight and a hatred of pirates during an incident when he was a pre-teen that resulted in his father's death at the hands of a band of mercenaries led by Ron MacDougall and his stranding on Sentinel III. Gene himself escaped safely to the planet Sentinel III and spent the next several years there. On Sentinel III, he met Jim Hawking, a 11-year old genius hacker. The pair became business partners in Starwind and Hawking Enterprises, primarily as repairmen, but also accepting various odd jobs, as long as they don't break the law. He is a reckless ladies' man and a bit of a pervert. He would rather try to achieve his goals in one fell swoop, with a minimum of effort, a characteristic that frustrates Jim; but he can think on his feet when he needs to. Gene is well armed with a variety of weapons such as a handgun, shotgun, knife, light shield, etc. His special weapon, a Caster gun, fires special Caster shells, which are basically magic bullets that are effective against Tao priests and other things that are protected against normal weaponry. Caster shells are considered antiques, however, and are difficult to acquire. Some of the effects of the caster shells include opening up small controlled black holes into an opponent.
- *Voices: Shigeru Shibuya (Japanese), Robert Buchholz (English)
- The 11-year-old James "Jim" Hawking is the business partner and sidekick of Gene Starwind. He is the son of a famous computer hacker known as the "Computer Wizard". How he met Gene is unknown. Jim serves as the team's computer expert, hacker, strategist, and back-up. He is responsible and concerned; he worries about the team's finances and plans, prefers to earn money the hard way rather than to take risks, and is often annoyed by Gene's lazy and cavalier attitude. Jim becomes good friends with fellow Outlaw Star crew member Aisha Clan Clan, who is in some ways his opposite: Jim gets treated like a kid even though he acts like an adult, while Aisha, though an adult, acts like a kid. Jim also looks up to the android Melfina as a mother figure, and gets along well with the Outlaw Star's on-board computer, Gilliam II. Jim has trouble, however, trusting strangers such as Hilda, who first approaches him and Gene under false pretenses, and Suzuka, who tries to kill Gene and whose motives are unclear. Episode 20 of the anime tells the story of Jim's first love, a young girl named Hanmyo who, unknown to the crew, is a combat pilot charged with destroying the Outlaw Star and its crew.
- *Voices: Rika Matsumoto (Japanese), Brianne Siddall (English)
- Melfina is a human and machine hybrid created from an ancient and unknown genome. The genome, in fact, was that of an emissary, simply referred to as "the maiden", from the Leyline itself. The maiden is the only one capable of finding, and navigating the way to the Galactic Leyline. The maiden is also the only one capable of accessing its great powers.
- *Voices: Ayako Kawasumi (Japanese), Bridget Hoffman and Emily Brown (English)
- Aisha Clanclan is a female Ctarl-Ctarl spacer. She is a dark-skinned catgirl with a drinking problem, a very large appetite, and the strength of ten men, depending on the phases of the moon on the planet she is on. She has the ability to turn into a large white tiger when she wants to, though in this form it is hard to communicate with her. When she transforms her clothes are destroyed, an example at the Galactic Leyline she lost her clothes but appeared in the Outlaw Star fully clothed; whether or not she has multple outfits is unknown. Aisha was originally in charge of locating the Galactic Leyline for the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire, but after she unknowingly allowed for Hot Ice Hilda to escape, her government ordered her to stay behind on Blue Heaven to look for clues as punishment. Aisha finds out that Gene Starwind is connected to Hilda and tries to pump him for information; however, Gene knows nothing of the Galactic Leyline. Later during the Space Race, after Aisha was able to trick Gene into letting her on board the Outlaw Star, she finds out that the MacDougall Brothers have more information on Hilda than they do. Aisha then decides to join the crew since they are the ones who were indirectly responsible for her demotion in the first place.
- *Voices: Yuko Miyamura (Japanese), Zan (English)
- "Twilight" Suzuka is a female Ultra Class A Assassin who only kills when the sun is setting. Her preferred weapon of choice is a wooden sword, which she can swing with enough force to fracture concrete. She first appears when she tries to kill Gene Starwind's friend Fred Luo as part of her contract with a rival weapons seller. Gene is able to outsmart her and force her to consent to come after him first before she kills Fred as part of her pride. However, in her next appearance, Suzuka saves Melfina from a Kei Pirate and decides to help the group against the Kei Pirates mainly to go after a member of the Anten Seven named Hitoriga who killed her family. Surprisingly, Suzuka seems to know more about the Kei Pirates than the rest of the crew. Among the various members on Gene’s ship Suzuka could best be considered the lone wolf, relying very little on outside help to accomplish her goals.
- *Voices: Sayuri (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)
- "Hot Ice" Hilda is an Outlaw who, for unknown reasons, has a problem with the Kei Pirates. Not much is known about Hilda from before she met Gene. She is responsible for taking out one of the Pirate Guild's leaders at the cost of an arm and an eye. In retaliation, she stole the XGP. After being pursued by pirates, she came to Sentinel III, where she met Gene and Jim under the name Rachel Sweet. When the pirates caught up with them, her true identity was revealed. She tried to kill Gene, but he was able to overpower her, and at gunpoint she revealed the existence of Melfina. Escaping with Gene, Jim, and Melfina, they made their way to Blue Heaven where, while resting, they were attacked by outlaws sent by the MacDougall Brothers. They escaped to the Farfallas system's sun, where the XGP was being held in an orbiting asteroid. The pirates used a Tao Spell to track them down and, thanks to the MacDougall brothers, Horus was destroyed. Hilda escaped and tried to reach the XGP by climbing the pirate's grappling cable. However, the cable snapped, sending Hilda, the Tao Master, and her ship into the sun. Hilda stopped the Tao Master from attacking the XGP by detonating a bomb hidden in her tooth. Her final words to Gene were that "Outlaws never go down easy." Possibly in memory of her, Gene named the ship the Outlaw Star.
- *Voices: Toshiko Fujita (Japanese), Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (English)
- Fred Luo is a camp weapons merchant and an old friend of Gene Starwind. Gene goes to him to supply weapons for the Outlaw Star, although it costs a lot of money for Grappler Ship weapons. Although Gene works hard to pay Fred back all the money he owes him, Fred offers discounts for doing favors for him and is willing to help Gene, so Gene is eventually able to pay him back. Fred is also obviously gay and may be in love with Gene Starwind. Fred appears briefly with his two bodyguards in Angel Links. Fred Luo's homosexuality is an accepted fact among many fans, and was cause for little controversy in Japan, where many anime are more intense and in depth in their portryal of homosexual characters. Still, Cartoon Network edited the sequences with Fred so that he was not 'too gay' for its first American television broadcast run. This more conservative editing went unnoticed by the majority of new viewers, but some hardcore fans found it offensive.
- *Voices: Toshihiko Seki (Japanese), Ethan Murray (English)
- Ronald MacDougall is the elder MacDougall Brother. Always calm, he is the brains of the MacDougall's entire operation. Ron has a past with Hilda. He uses a caster gun like Gene, but it is basically the barrel of a Caster fashioned in the style of a Shakujo, the staff often carried by Buddhist monks. At the Leyline, Gene used a #9 shell to badly injure Ron. He and Harry, as the Shangri La's Main Computer, departed. It is unknown what has happened to both brothers.
- *Voices: Kazuhiro Nakata (Japanese), Jack Emmet (English)
- Harry MacDougall is the younger MacDougall Brother. 19 years old, he was born of genetic engineering in a test tube. Though he is usually calm, he is prone to fits of extreme rage and hate. Throughout the series he is in love with Melfina and tries numerous times to get her to return the affection. His body also gradually breaks down throughout the series; he first loses his arm to a gunshot from Gene, then loses most of his body when Gene destroys a mech suit he is wearing. He meets his end at the hands of Hazanko. It was then when he finally told Melfina how he felt. He lives on as the Shangri La's main computer, where a backup of his memories and personality were stored. However, this likely doesn't include memories of the last moments of his life.
- *Voices: Tsutomu Kashiwakura (Japanese), Steve Staley (English)
- The Kei Pirates are a collection of users of Tao magic. The group most often mentioned in the series is the 108 Stars, led by the mysterious Tendo King. Those in Outlaw Star are mostly lead by Hazanko and his elite Anten Seven.
- Hazanko is the leader of the Anten Seven and a high ranking member of the 108 Stars. Wanting absolute power, he began searching for the Galactic Leyline to gain enough power to defeat the Tendo King. A ruthless tyrant, he was willing to do anything, even sacrifice his own people. Though the Leyline gave him the power he wanted, he was nevertheless defeated by Gene and the Outlaw Star.
- *Voices: Seizo Katou (Japanese), Tom Wyner (English)
- The Anten Seven, led by Hazanko, are an elite group of assassins sent after Gene and the crew of the Outlaw Star.
- *Shimi, whose real name is Leilong, is the first assassin sent after Gene. He carries an immense backpack around with him, which is full of an assortment of weapons, including a sword, pistol, rockets, and a top of the line Space Forces light shield. He is a very skilled dueler and is yet to be defeated. During their duel, he easily defeats Gene. After witnessing this, Jim, Aisha, and Suzuka made a hasty attack for vengeance and were thoroughly defeated. Surviving with a leg wound, Gene was challenged to a one-shot duel by Shimi. Gene won the duel due to Shimi having a faulty gun. Believed to be dead, he was buried by Gene and the others. He eventually dug himself out of his grave muttering: "They should have buried me deeper". Instead of continuing his life as an assassin, Shimi chose to start his life anew as a wandering outlaw.
- **Voices: Yuusaku Yara (Japanese), Steve Bulen (English)
- *Iraga is the second assassin encountered. She is a member of the Hoke Shadow Boxing team and wears a pair of goggles to hide her wolf eyes. She has the ability, similar to Aisha, to transform into a large wolf. It is unknown whether she is a Ctarl-Ctarl race because as Aisha put it "The Ctarl-Ctarl don't hang out with low level wolves like her. That's an insult!" She was defeated by Aisha in the final round of the Strongest Woman in the Universe tournament.
- **Voices: Chiyako Shibahara (Japanese), Barbara Goodson (English)
- *Hanmyo is the youngest member of the Seven and is an expert on space combat using her cats. Through a mental link she can communicate with her cats and allows them to pilot their sections of the ship. She had a romantic involvement with Jim, but was brought to a tragic end when the Outlaw Star unknowingly destroyed their ship. A rose could be seen floating in space from the flowers Jim gave to her.
- **Voices: Tomoko Kawakami (Japanese), Rebecca Forstadt (English)
- *Hamushi fought Gene at the Leyline. She is a temptress who uses her sex appeal to send her enemies in to a false sense of security, and then uses her fan to send out powerful shock waves. She is also immune to most Caster Shells. She is defeated when Gene uses the number #4 shell to kill her.
- **Voices: Mako Hyoudou (Japanese), Dorothy Elias-Fahn (English)
- *Jukai is an old man with a very raspy voice, little is known about him. He is wrapped from the neck down in a straitjacket with spikes on the back and wears a mask with the number six on it. He attacks by turning into a giant whirlwind, appearing to be made of water, and ramming into his opponents. He was defeated by Aisha at the Leyline.
- **Voices: Masashi Ebara (Japanese), Doug Stone (English)
- *Hitoriga is an assassin much like Suzuka, not much is known except for the fact that he is the one who killed Suzuka's family. A sword fighter himself, in his first battle with Suzuka(which he won and was the only person who ever defeated her in a swordfight) he changed his face and body to look like Suzuka. He did that because he was in love with her and wanted to see her face since he knew he could never have her. He was defeated by Suzuka's Crimson technque, a sword technique she devised specifically to kill him.
- **Voices: Kiyonobu Suzuki (Japanese), Barry Stigler (English)
- *Tobigera is a master of disguise. He was mainly for comic relief in the Hot Springs Planet episode. He was absorbed into the Geomancer along with Hazanko and was killed by the Outlaw Star. He has a claw with four long blades on his right arm.
- **Voices: Hikaru Midorikawa (Japanese), Michael Lindsay (English)
- The 108 Stars are a group of Tao magic users from the Hoppo system, and members of the Kei Pirates. The name may come from the legend of the 108 Stars of Destiny, of the classic Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan. Centered around the Tendo King, their leader, the 108 Stars operate in smaller groups of 10 or 20, with the leaders of these groups acting as independents, pursuing their own interests. In the series, the group that pursues Gene Starwind and the rest of the crew of the Outlaw Star is led by a man called Hazanko. The members of this group supposedly possess a great power known as Sunjutsu (pronounced soon-joot-su), which is based on feng shui. They hunt Gene and his companions relentlessly, eventually setting the Anten Seven after them. The Seven and Hazanko are eventually defeated, yet the 108 Stars live on.
- Professor Gwen Khan was one of the lead scientists on the Leyline Project and has an eternal quest for all of the knowledge of the universe and its many problems. He is seen in multiple episodes, usually questioning Melfina and Gene about finding the Leyline, among other things. At the end of the series his goal for knowledge is fulfilled by the power of the Leyline.
- *Voices: Takeshi Aono (Japanese), Milton James (English)
Minor characters
- Swanzo - A Corbanite and the chief mechanic at Blue Heaven. He was saved by Hilda when his ship was attacked by Ban pirates. His translator has been known to glitch, and will occasionally speak in Corbanese.
- Mikey - Swanzo's partner at Blue Heaven. He doesn't like to work for free.
The XGP15A-II - Outlaw Star
The XGP15A-II, or Outlaw Star, is as its onboard AI Gilliam II insists, "the fastest, most advanced ship in the galaxy." It was constructed by the Kei space pirate guild using connections with the Space Forces military. Powered by four plasma fusion Unsen engines (most fast ships have one) and a powerful Munchausen reactor for use with its "sub-ether" faster-than-light drive. In addition, it is a "grappler ship", that is, a spaceship with manipulator arms modified for combat purposes. It is designed so that the Bio-Android Melfina, who was created by the scientist Gwen Khan, can link up with and control the navigational systems. This was intended for the sole purpose of navigating the Galactic Leyline.
It was originally stolen by Hilda and hidden in an asteroid by the star Farfallas. She later came back with Gene, Jim, and Melfina. However the Kei Pirates placed a Tao spell on her ship, Horus, and tracked them there. During the battle the MacDougall Brothers, who were secretly hired by the Space Forces to destroy all traces of their partnership with the Kei Pirates, arrived. In the end Gene, Jim, and Melfina escaped with the ship. Gene decided to name the XGP the "Outlaw Star", possibly in memory of Hilda.
Other Ships
- The Geomancer is the cruiser belonging to Hazanko, and the mobile base for his organization, the Anten Seven. It is an enormous grappler ship designed in the classical style of the Chinese guild.
- The Shangri-la is a four-armed, high-speed grappler ship on par with the Outlaw Star. It belongs to Ron MacDougall. Its hull is a bright gold in color, and its arms, weapons, landing gear, and other tools are all hidden under retractable hull plates, making the ship all but seamless while in flight.
- The El Dorado is the sister ship of the Shangri-la built to be a racer so that the MacDougall brothers could enter the Heifong Space Race. It is identical to the Shangri-la in every respect. Its name - El Dorado, after the legendary city of gold - is from its bright golden hull.
- Horus is a long-range cruiser that was Hilda's last ship. Horus is run almost completely by an AI, just like the Outlaw Star. Its true speed is not in its regular ion engines, but in the fact that it has four sub-ether engines, giving it unparalleled range for a single sub-ether jump. Its four large pylons hide triple-barreled laser turrets and enormous banks of rocket launchers, enabling it to take on entire squadrons of smaller vessels. Horus is far too large to make planetfall, so it has a small drop-ship for the crew.
- The Orta Hone-Hone is an enormous Ctarl-Ctarl battlecruiser and the primary deep space fleet vessel of the Empire. At the beginning of the story, the Orta Hone-Hone is under the command of Aisha Clan-Clan, but she quickly loses that command due to incompetence. The cruiser is under orders to locate the Galactic Leyline.
- The Nuburu Bori-Bori is a small Ctarl-Ctarl freighter assigned to the area of the Heifong system. Since his business rarely takes him anywhere else, the captain annually participates in the Heifong space race to alleviate the monotony.
Planets and Space Stations
- Sentinel III - A level 4 terraformed world. It is as Gene puts it, "A planet out in the middle of nowhere." It is the home of Gene and Jim. The space port is called the Locust Space Port.
- Blue Heaven - An asteroid colony, or a free town. Blue Heaven is only seen at the beginning of the series and the last episode. Mikey and Swanzo work as mechanics at Blue Heaven.
- Heifong (also spelled Heiphon) - Where the majority of the series takes place. It is one of the planets in the Heifong system, such as the water planet Heifong 7. It is a very expensive place to live.
- Symka 5 - A satellite where Jim first met Hanmyo.
- Tenrei - A pleasure planet that is covered in hot springs. A long time ago, three wizards came to this paradise of nature attempting to resurrect the mana, the energy of nature. Instead, one of them happened upon the hot springs and turned the entire planet into her own interstellar vacation spot. The wizards are the creators of Caster bullets.
Races
- Terrans - Also known as humans. Terran is the term used by many space creatures to refer to humans. Gene, Jim, Fred and many others in the series are Terran. Referred to as "Commons" in the Japanese version. Terran comes from the Latin word, "Terra", meaning Earth.
- Ctarl-Ctarl - A cat-like race, Aisha is a Ctarl-Ctarl. The Ctarl-Ctarl have amazing hearing and strength as well as an ability to turn into a large vicious animal. The Ctarl-Ctarl is a vast empire that after many battles with Humans had establish trade treaties and are now on pretty decent terms. The Frontier - the area of space where the story takes place - lies in between the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire and the Terran Federation, and was established as a buffer zone after numerous battles between the two species.
- Silgrians - A peaceful race in the Outlaw Star universe which resemble anthropomorphized birds. They are considered by many to be too friendly. Physically they are usually at least 180 cm (6ft) tall, and have necks that can make a 180 degree rotatation or can turn their head completely upward. Their eyes also have two lids.
- Corbanites - An industrious race of frog-like amphibians. Their natural habitat is in the water, so Corbanites wear environment suits that maintain an aquatic environment to their liking. With their technological advancement, most Corbanites fit their enviro-suits with translators that turn their native Corbonese into the local language.
- Sith - An insectoid race that are so alien to the other humanoid races that any manner of relationship with them is all but impossible.
- Lorgans - A secretive and distrusting people, the Lorgans are not mentioned much in the series. They apparently have such a strained relationship with the Terrans that the two races just avoid one another.
- Saurians - A bio-engineered race of reptiles created by Terrans by combining different strains of dinosaur DNA. Saurians are tall, powerful, imposing creatures with the intelligence and cunning of any Terran combined with the strength and viciousness of their great lizard ancestors.
- Tenrei Aliens - Small, furry creatures that are only seen in the video introducing Tenrei. When the three wizards arrived on their planet, the pleasant little creatures welcomed them with open arms. They introduced them to the hot springs that held rejuvinating powers. This was their downfall. The most shrewd of the wizards began opening more hot springs and also bringing in heavy construction equipment to start building hotels and the like. In the rapid expansion of humans across Tenrei, the small aliens were lost and are now presumed extinct.
- There are supposedly many other races in the world of Outlaw Star, some so bizarre that their forms and mental capabilities are beyond anything mankind could ever expect.
The Galactic Leyline
The Galactic Leyline is a location shrouded in myth; rumors and superstition surround the Galactic Leyline, and popular opinion claims that there is an immense treasure of valuable metal or mineral at the Leyline. The Galactic Leyline is actually an intelligent library created by an advanced but now-extinct race. This race possessed an unsurpassed knowledge of science, technology, and reality. Drawing upon Feng Shui, the word leyline means "a place where Ki collects." By manipulating the Ki lines (the timelines, referring to the idea that time is linear and branching, instead of looping and singular) of the universe, the Galactic Leyline has the ability to manipulate time and reality. Since all things are thought to have Ki in a sense, Ki lines are actually people's lives from birth to death. Additionally, the Leyline also has infinite power to create, change, or destroy anything, leading to the legend that the Leyline can grant anything one's heart desires.
The Leyline Project, created to find the Leyline, was founded long before the story begins through the secret wisdom of the Grave of the Dragon by a coalition between the Space Forces and the Pirates. The Space Forces later backed out, but the Pirates continued onward with their goal. With information and instructions found in the Grave of the Dragon, they managed to create the XGP and the bio-android Melfina. Melfina was designed to function as a highly sophisticated navigational system which would eventually unlock the doors of the Leyline. Additionally, the Leyline recognizes Melfina as "the Maiden of the Leyline," and grants wishes through only her.
The Galactic Leyline itself takes the form of a large gaseous planet consisting of thick clouds and strong vortexes that serve as protective barriers for the Leyline within. Only one guided by the Maiden in the XGP (or a ship nearly similar in speed and capabilities) can pass through this barrier via small wormholes created by the vortexes of the planet. Entrance through any other means results in death or insanity from a brain-splitting screeching that only seems to affect organic creatures. Hazanko, the main villain, also gains entrance to the inner Leyline by means of powerful Taoist rituals that force the clouds to part.
Once through the outer atmosphere of the Leyline, ships enter a planet-sized cylindrical structure and are transported to an entirely different location with breathable air and normal gravity. This bizarre setting consists of landscapes of large crystal formations and strange foliage. The landscapes surround a mountain, on top of which is the door to the Leyline, which can only be accessed by Melfina. Once inside, Melfina and those with her are transported to the core of the Galactic Leyline (a large color-shifting sphere echos in a booming feminine voice "Why doth thou return?," "What is thy desire?," and "There is but one path.") where the physical embodiment of the Leyline lurks. The Leyline's physical form resembles a serpentine cactus made out of wood, with Melfina's face. After granting the wishes of those with Melfina, the Leyline relocates itself to a random point in the universe to be found again.

Episode 23
Episode 23, The Hot Springs of Planet Tenrei, was banned from the Cartoon Network airings due to its fanservicey nature of the episode (i.e., partial frontal nudity and sex-related humor). However, it has been shown on UK channel CNX, and later on the British and Spanish versions of Toonami, completely uncensored. It is also currently available on DVD and VHS (although the VHS version is now out of print and can only be bought through a seller). Cartoon Network claimed that it was irrelevant to the plot, though some argue that it plays a key role in later episodes since it explains the source of the four unique caster shells that Gene uses in the last two episodes and their life-draining side effect.External links and references
