Over Here! is a musical with music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman and a book by Will Holt. The show was directed by Tom Moore and choreographed by Patricia Birch. It takes place during World War II on a cross country train trip in the United States (hence the name of the play, in contrast to Over There). The show begins as a nostalgic window into 1940s America but quickly evolves into a social commentary. The play deals with the fear of dying in battle, prejudice and discrimination.
Songs from the play include "Charlie's Place", "Don't Shoot the Hooey To Me Louie", "Dream Drummin'", "Where Did the Good Times Go?" and the title song, "Over Here!".
Over Here! opened on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre (Broadway) on March 6, 1974 starring the Andrews Sisters, John Travolta, Treat Williams, Marilu Henner, Samuel E. Wright, and Ann Reinking. It marked the beginning of a record breaking number of now iconic actors' careers. However Patty Andrews' husband sued the show midseason forcing its untimely end. The case was eventually dismissed but the show closed on January 4, 1975. The musical ran for 341 performances on Broadway. Janie Sell, who played the part of "Mitzi the spy", won the "Best Featured Actress" Tony Award as well as the 1974 Theatre World Award.
