History

The Greys play out of the Midwestern Junior B Hockey League of the Ontario Hockey Association, but at one point were the best of the highest tier of Junior hockey, winning the 1924 and 1927 Memorial Cups. In the late 1930s, the Junior "B" Greys were the farm team for the OHA Jr. "A" Owen Sound Trappers. The 1924 team included future Hockey Hall of Famer Cooney Weiland.

The team went through a rough spell in the 70s, playing only one season in half a decade. That one season was a member of the renegade Southern Ontario Junior A Hockey League. Prior to that, as the Owen Sound Sounders, the team played in the Central Junior C Hockey League.

Since 1978, the team has made the Midwestern "B" finals 3 times, but have never won -- nor have they yet won the Sutherland Cup as Ontario Junior "B" Champions. Although never winning the Midwestern Junior "B" League, the Greys did win the 1987 Ontario Hockey Association Junior "A" Championship.

Between 1941 and 1987, the Greys went through a series of leagues, name changes, and the odd hiatus. The team does date back to at least the end of World War I, and has played as low as Junior "C", but has also tackled some of the best Junior teams in hockey history, with 2 National titles as Memorial Cup Champs and a OHA Jr. "A" Championship under their belt. The only thing that has ever eluded the franchise is the Sutherland Cup.

The Greys sometimes play out of the Saugeen Shores area, also known as Port Elgin, Ontario. They also, for the longest time, were the farm team for the Ontario Hockey League's Owen Sound Platers (now known as the Attack). Due to financial disagreements in 1998 between the Platers and the Greys, the Platers dropped the Greys in favour of the OPJHL's ill-fated Durham Huskies. This prompted a pair of heavily anticipated and heated exhibition games between the Greys and the Huskies in 2000. The Greys won both games, and bragging rights. Although the Greys beat the Junior "A" team, the Huskies, with only 21 wins in 149 OPJHL regular season games, were a 3-year running basement dweller and did not reflect the excellent talent of the OPJHL. The Greys also ended up being Regular Season champions that year, and only managed to narrowly beat the lowly Huskies. The Greys have since come to terms with the (now) Owen Sound Attack.
