Owings Mills Mall

Encyclopedia : O : OW : OWI : Owings Mills Mall

Owings Mills Mall is a shopping mall that opened in Owings Mills, Maryland, in 1986 containing anchor stores Macy's (formerly Hecht's), JC Penney, and Boscov's (opening fall 2006).

Owings Mills Mall initially catered to an upscale clinetele in the northwestern Baltimore suburbs, with anchors Hecht's, Macy's (initially intended to be Bamberger's, but Macy's bought out that chain just before Owings Mills Mall opened), and Saks Fifth Avenue. Owings Mills had the only Saks in the Baltimore region, but the store closed in 1996 and was replaced by JC Penney. The mall was renovated and expanded in 1998, with the addition of Sears and Lord & Taylor as well as a 17-screen AMC Theaters. However, the expansion proved unsuccessful, as Sears lasted only one year and Lord & Taylor lasted only two. The Sears and Lord & Taylor buildings are empty as of 2006. Owings Mills Mall's struggles are likely due to increased competition from the Mall in Columbia, which was renovated in the late 1990s, and from the nearby Towson Town Center, which was expanded in 1992.

In early 2006, Macy's moved into the former Hecht's location due to the buyout of May Department Stores by Federated Department Stores, and the mall's Macy's store will be converted to Boscov's in fall 2006.
