Ownlife
Encyclopedia : O : OW : OWN : Ownlife
In George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, ownlife means to do anything that suggests a taste for solitude, even take a walk by oneself. While in itself not constituting crimethink, it is a kind of behaviour strongly disapproved by the Party and apt to bring a person to the attention of the Thought Police. From the Party's point of view, Winston Smith's career could serve as an example to the assertion that excessive indulgence in ownlife - such as avoiding community hikes and taking long walks through the back streets of London - could indeed eventually lead a person to become a full-fledged Thought Criminal.
