Oy (Dark Tower)

Encyclopedia : O : OY : OYD : Oy (Dark Tower)

Oy is a character from the Dark Tower series written by Stephen King. Oy is a "Billy-Bumbler", an animal which resembles a cross between a dog and a raccoon with a tail being described as "corkscrew in appearance". Introduced in The Waste Lands, the third book in the series, Oy befriends one of the main characters, Jake Chambers.

Billy-Bumblers have the ability to mimic human speech much in the same way as a parrot. This is, in fact, where Oy got his name; Jake, in the story, notices the creature near their camp and calls to it, "Come here, boy." The animal, unable to perfectly copy the words, said "Oy" repeatedly, hence his name. The creature seems fairly intelligent and is considered a real part of the ka-tet.

Oy develops emotions and even a sense of humanity past that of his ability to replicate some words that the others speak. Oy is often referenced as the smartest bumbler that people have seen since the world had moved on. Oy, much like Jake shows times when he's able to retain his original instinct and innocence that he had before the quest while playing with Jake or during times of rest for the gunslingers. During the quest or when a problem comes up Oy is a valuable ally.

Oy ultimately died saving Roland from Mordred.
