A pyramid made in such a way that it retains a pyramidal shape as it’s being constructed. Oyam was a mythical builder who created a large pyramid in an uncertain and unpredictable amount of time. According to the story, young Oyam was hired by a pharaoh to build a pyramid shaped tomb. Oyam wanted to eliminate the risk of having the king laid to rest in a diminutive or unfinished structure (Figure A), so rather than building the pyramid from the ground up, he built it sideways instead (Figure B). This strategy permitted the pyramid to grow during the life of the pharaoh and was immediately available when he died.
Oyam’s Pyramid is sometimes used to describe how it’s possible to develop large scale software projects without knowing the budget and schedule in advance.
