Ozzie, Slash, and Flea

Encyclopedia : O : OZ : OZZ : Ozzie, Slash, and Flea

Ozzie, Slash, and Flea are non-playable characters (NPCs) in the Chrono Trigger video game.

Ozzie, Slash, and Flea are Magus's three underlings in his war against the human race in 600 A.D. They inhabit Magus' castle and attempt to stop Crono and his friends from reaching Magus while he is summoning Lavos. After Magus is drawn into the time portal and transported to 12,000 B.C., Ozzie takes up residence within his own fort farther to the east keeping the Mystics under his power.

They also make an appearance as a hidden boss in the game's sequel, Chrono Cross, and are nicknamed the Mystic Warriors.

The names of all three are most likely references to real-life people, with Ozzie being a reference to Ozzy Osbourne, Slash to the lead guitarist of the same name of Guns N' Roses, and Flea being a reference to the bassist of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Michael Balzary, whose nickname is Flea. #redirect A woman in the Elder's House of the town of Dorino in 600 A.D. calls the three villains "tone-deaf, evil fiends," a statement which is most likely poking fun at their real-life counterparts.

Ozzie

Ozzie is a rather fat and large Mystic. He is the leader of the Mystics when young Janus arrives in a time portal after being teleported out of the Kingdom of Zeal in 12,000 B.C. From the events provided, Ozzie raised Janus and developed his magical skills. However, Janus soon became too powerful for even the great Ozzie to handle and the roles were switched: Janus became Magus and the new leader of the Mystics. Ozzie remained loyal as a war started against the Kingdom of Guardia and the human race. He continued to retain a position of power.

The war was reaching its peak in 600 A.D. during the battle of Zenan Bridge in which Ozzie raised the dead and summoned Zombor to try to invade Guardia. Frog, wielding the legendary Masamune, broke into Magus' castle with Crono, and they started to make their way to the leader of the Mystics. With Magus in the middle of summoning Lavos, Ozzie was in charge of defending the castle and lead the heroes through a series of deadly traps and his two cohorts, Slash and Flea. Ozzie had already witnessed the power of Crono on Zenan Bridge firsthand and was not eager to feel its pain again. He repeatedly runs away from the heroes with his infamous line: "Ozzie's in a pickle!" Ozzie manages to escape to the entrance of Magus' throne room before he decides to fight. Once the battle begins, the coward turns on his near-indestructible ice shield and laughs as the heroes try to break it. However, the heroes discover the switches behind him, which opened up trap doors, and he was easily defeated when he fell into one.

After his fall, Magus, Crono, and his friends are all swept away in Lavos' time portal, giving Ozzie the opportunity to regain control over the Mystics. As the war against Guardia is finished, Ozzie moves to the aptly named Ozzie's Fort, ruling over the Mystics. He has become slightly stronger, equipped with Ozzie's Pants (which are worn on the head), and has been renamed "Great Ozzie". With Flea and Slash still working for him, the trio engage in an ultimate battle against the heroes. They are even capable of triple techs between them such as Delta Force and Bad Impulse (an imitation of Crono, Marle and Frog's Arc Impulse). Once the battle is over, Ozzie runs from the room and sets up another ice barrier. This time the traps also work against the heroes who fall and quickly return to battle. However, before the finishing blow can be struck to the trap switch, a little kitten walks in and hits it. Ozzie falls and disappears for the rest of the game, although his descendant can be seen working as a cleaner in the Mystic's village in the present.

Slash

Slash is a tall and lanky Mystic with an obsession with swords. He is considered a great swordsman, and is very pleased with the opportunity to fight Crono and Frog when they arrive at Magus' castle. He is resistant to any kind of magical attack but can't himself cast spells. Midway through the fight, Slash decides that Crono and Frog are worthy fighters and grabs the sword Slasher off the wall. He is however defeated.

With his failure to defend Magus' castle against the heroes, Slash is provided a new sword, the Slasher 2, and changes his name to Super Slash.

He was finally defeated in the battle of the 3 Mystics against the heroes at Ozzie's Fort.

Flea

Flea is undoubtedly one of the oddest characters Crono and his friends ever encounter. Flea appears to be a human female (ample breasts and mini-skirt), but insists that he/she is actually a man. This is supported when you fight the trio in Chrono Cross; as all characters and monsters have a gender marking in their status boxes, Flea is marked as a male by the game (even though he is in clearly female form). One way or another, Flea is a gifted magician and aims to strike fear and confusion into the hearts of his enemies. Flea has the ability of transforming into a bat and actually follows the heroes around the castle for quite some time before eventually showing his true colors and coming out. He is defeated by the heroes in their first confrontation.

As expected, Flea joins Ozzie and Slash in Ozzie's fort. He now has the Flea Vest (a bra), and is now named Flea Plus. With a few upgrades to his magical arsenal, Flea prepares himself again to battle it out, however, it was not meant to be. Flea takes the loss bows out.
