PGNx Media, informally referred to as PGNx, is a multiplatform videogame website. PGNx Media provides daily coverage for the video game industry. Available content includes reviews, previews, news, editorials, interviews, book reviews, and more.

History

PGNx Media was founded in January of 2002 by Jose Liz-Moncion as PGNx, which stood for Pro Games Network. The website was quickly renamed PGNx Network with the letters "PGNx" no longer standing for anything. It was founded to become a host for smaller gaming websites after Jose's troubled experience with former networks. Although the name didn't change for over a year, no additional websites were added to PGNx Network. Eventually, this planned was scrapped and the site was renamed PGNx Media.

Coverage

PGNx Media originally covered the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. As its popularity increased and additional editors joined the staff, the website expanded its focus to include PC games and GBA. Since that time, the website has covered new videogame platforms as they have been released. There are currently designated pages for the Nintendo DS, PSP, N-Gage, and Xbox 360. In addition, pages can be found for the PlayStation 3, and Wii, which are expected to be released this November.

PGNx Media has gained success by providing reviews for the highest-profile games as soon as they are released. The website had reviews for games such as Doom 3, before reviews could be found on larger websites such as GameSpot and IGN. Occasionally, a front page story will boast of an exclusive review for the wbesite. The website had a long-running sponsorship deal with Alienware. There were numerous Alienware advertisements on the page and PC games were noted to be running on Alienware technology. This designation no longer appears on current PC game reviews.

Recognition

PGNx Media's success has been recognized by other websites, as well. In fact, PGNx Media is best known for its reviews syndication, which appear on many other publications. Its reviews are included in CNet's GameRankings and Metacritic, IGN's Rotten Tomatoes and GameStats, and Ziff Davis' GameTab.com, among others. Its score influences the average score that these websites give a certain title this is especially notable because not all websites have their scores included in the average. The fact that its scores are included shows that the editors of these websites trust the opinion of PGNx Media's staff.

Aside from recognition within the games journalism industry, the website has established relationships with the videogames industry's leading publishers, which enables it to run reviews for new games soon after it is released. In addition, a search for "PGNx Media" on Google gives back 174,000 results. A search for PGNx Media gives back 189,000 results. A handful of websites carry thousands of links to PGNx Media because they distribute PGNx Media's content to other users. In part because of the success of the website, Jose was admitted to the world-renowned Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. The School has recently been looking for entrepreneurship in its students and PGNx Media showcased this for them.

Criticism

PGNx Media faced early criticism throughout the years for unreliable stability. It was sometimes down for days or even weeks. In the past year or two, the website's performance has improved significantly. More recently, PGNx Media has faced criticism for high review scores. The administration has responded by saying that they do not limit the amount of high scores they can give per month like some other publications.
