The laboratory

PNNL is located in Richland, Washington and has been operated by the Battelle Memorial Institute (Battelle) since 1965. PNNL was created to support the Manhattan Project during World War II, and supported the Hanford Site during the Cold War.

PNNL is managed by Battelle for DOE's Office of Science, but performs work for many Department of Energy offices and government agencies (e.g., Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security). In addition to basic research, its current mission includes assisting in the cleanup push at the Hanford Site and developing environmental technology.

PNNL is a major employer in the area. Many Ph.D.s work for the laboratory on various aspects of science and technology development.

PNNL has a variety of scientific instrumentation available for certified use; these include transmission electron microscopes, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, a large Linux cluster, and other unique instruments.

Current work at PNNL includes but is not limited to organic light-emitting diodes, characterization of nuclear materials, proteomics, hydrogen fuel cells and other fuel cell technologies, atmospheric modelling, nanotechnology and nuclear non-proliferation.
