Paice, Ashton and Lord (PAL), was a rhythm and blues, funky-soul, rock band founded after the break-up of the British superband Deep Purple in 1977. Ian Paice and Jon Lord, Deep Purple's drummer and keyboardist, joined friend Tony Ashton, a British keyboardist and singer, for this project.
The beginnings
Lord had joined Ashton in the past to record the album "The First Of The Big Bands" in 1974. There was a BBC Live In Concert recording for this event that year. Tony Ashton also collaborated on Jon Lord´s Gemini Suite project in 1971, in which he sang lead vocals on the first song. He took part in more Lord´s solo works and also in some Deep Purple´s bassist Roger Glover´s solo projects. Ashton was also invited to participate in the Wizard's Convention editions 1, 2 and 3. Two albums were recorded as PAL, and also a video in which you could see the band recording their first album in the studio recording sessions.
The name of the first album was "Malice in Wonderland" and was released in 1977. It was re-released on CD in 1995 by Repertoire Records. The second album wasn't released or was lost for a long time, or is the BBC Live in Concert recordings they made in 1977, but when "Malice in Wonderland" will soon be re-released on CD by Purple Records, it is said that it will include 30 minutes of music from the second album.
The end and the renaissance of derived great bands
Unfortunately the band lasted just for a few months, after which Lord and Paice went on to join David Coverdale's Whitesnake. Later on, Paice joined Gary Moore´s band with whom he recorded the albums "Corridors of Power", "Victims of the Future", and "We Want Moore", this last one recorded live.
Finally Deep Purple re-formed in 1984, with Paice and Lord as part of Deep Purple´s most successful Mark II line-up. Deep Purple are still recording CD´s and videos as well as touring around the world, but Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord, the original co-founders and owners of the original idea are now away from the band. Now, the only original member from Deep Purple Mark I is Ian Paice, although Ian Gillan and Roger Glover from Deep Purple Mark II are still in. Blackmore is now successfully doing the Renaissance music he always wanted to do, with his wife's (Candice Night) vocals. Jon Lord has recently been working on his orchestral projects and Tony Ashton passed away. He suffered cancer and died on 28 May 2001.
