The word Para- in English, is an affix of ancient Greek and Latin origin, mostly used as a prefix.
- In Greek, it means: Beside, with, alongside. (as in paragraph)
- In Latin, it means: Against, counter, outside or beyond the norm. For example parapluie in French meaning an umbrella (litt. counter-rain).
- something which is beyond normal is described as paranormal
- In organic chemistry, "para" (along with "ortho" and "meta") is used to distinguish the three types of isomer of disubstituted benzenes: it indicates that the substituents are at locants 1 and 4. It is printed in italic type, and is often abbreviated as p in compound names. For example, the compound name para-xylene is equivalent to p-xylene.
- In psychology and psychiatry "para" is a prefix used to describe symptoms that mimic one disorder, that are occurring within another disorder, but not so severe as to be considered co-occurring or co-morbid. (e.g., para-Borderline behavior in conjunction with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD); a paraphilia, which is a non-specfic fetish, etc.).
