Parley
Encyclopedia : P : PA : PAR : Parley
Parler is a discussion or conference, especially one between enemies over terms of truce or other matters. It is likely derived from the French verb "parler", which means "to speak".
Part of the pirate code of the Brethren, set down by the pirates Henry Morgan and Bartholomew Roberts. Though there was a loose confederation of pirates, centered around Tortuga, who were known as the Brethren of the Coast--and they did have a code governing certain aspects of buccaneer life--this particular, seemingly omnipotent, version of the code never actually existed. It and the term "parler," however, were made famous by the Disney movie [[Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl]]. In the movie, parley became a running joke when each affiliation would come into contact with an enemy. Commonly, three of the main characters would come across the crew of the Black Pearl under Captain Barbossa, then call parley, usually in front of the pirate Pintel. Three quarters of the way through the movie, Pintel is sick and tired of prisoners calling parley, but finally says it himself upon being captured by the British Royal Navy.
