Parquet
Encyclopedia : P : PA : PAR : Parquet
The parquet is, in some countries, including France, the prosecution service. The parquet général is the prosecution service of a cour d'appel or the Cour de Cassation.
The word literally means "wooden floor"; this is because, as opposed to the judges, who sit on an elevated platform during trials, the prosecution pleads standing on the floor.
This also explains why the judges are sometimes referred to as "sitting magistrates" (magistrature assise) or "magistrates of the Seat" (magistrats du siège) while the prosecutors are sometimes referred to as "standing magistrates" (magistrature debout).
The old Boston Garden used a parquet floor, unlike most basketball arenas, which use long, wooden strips.
Helpful Advice
- : Parquet is a natural, easy to maintain and hygienic floor covering. In order to keep its beautiful and fine appearance, it is essential to follow the care instructions below.
Swelling and shrinking of wood
- :- wood is a hygroscopic natural material, therefore it adapts its moisture level to the humidity of its surrounding.
- :- parquet flooring is influenced by room climate it is placed in.
- :- an essential change of humidity will cause slight signs of movements of parquet. This process is known as the "movement of the wood".
- :- a humidity of more than 65% in summer time and below 40% in winter time will cause noticeable swelling and shrinking of the parquet flooring. However, this should be not considered as a disadvantage of wood but as one of its natural characteristics.
- :Conclusion: it is very advisable to avoid extreme variations in room climate.
General Advice
- :The natural wear and tear of all surface treatments depends on the usage of flooring. Thus, a regular maintenance system is necessary. The quality of the surface treatment and the wooden flooring can only be guaranteed if the maintenance system recommended by the manufacturer of wooden flooring is applied.
- :Regular polishing will delay the natural wear and tear of the surface.
General cleaning
- :It is highly recommended to protect the wooden flooring from sand, stones and water. The manufactures recommend using entrance and barrier matting and also pads under chairs and tables in order to prevent scratches on the floor. If the room is not used immediately after laying, it is very to keep the regular airing in heating, especially in the new buildings. A strong sunlight also can damage the parquet flooring, by fading the wood and changing the color.
- : The frequency if the general cleaning depends on the desired appearance of the wooden flooring.
Technical Datasheet: Parquet with hot water under floor heating system
The parquet designed for use with hot water under floor heating systems has established itself as a successful product over the decades. Although the demand for parquet with hot water under floor heating system has increased during recent years, there are several rules which need to be known before installation.- not all types of parquet are suitable for under-floor-heating (warm water). Should be mainly used types having predominantly transverse annual rings (quarter sawn, mainly for solid wood).
- not all types of wood are suitable for under-floor-heating (warm water). Some of manufactures would not recommend beech, mountain maple and Canadian maple. They advise to use instead wood species with good swelling and shrinking performance (e.g. oak).
- an adequate wood humidity is essential.
- laying patterns as herringbone, twin herringbone, plait or dice have certain advantages compared to lamella pattern.
- a proper temperature of approx. 20C degrees should be maintained in the room.
- a constant relative humidity of approx. 50% should be maintained in the room.
- the surface temperature of parquet floors must not exceed 26C degrees.
