Pavatar

Encyclopedia : P : PA : PAV : Pavatar

The Personal Avatar (aka Pavatar) is a picture hosted on your webspace which can be used by webmasters to display an image referring to you. E.g. you make a comment or a forum posting and the Pavatar implementation displays the image. This way, delivering your Personal Avatar is peripheral and can be (nearly) anonymous, so there is no way for companies to collect information about your habits on the internet.

The specification was created by Jeena Paradies.

The Pavatar approach

Like the Favatar Pavatar uses the commentators URL to autodiscover the Pavatar on the commentators homepage, but unlike it it uses a resource, so not only one but different people can use one domain with different Pavatars.

Favatars are only 16x16px. Pavatars are as big as Gravatars 80x80px. There is no central rating system yet, so everyone has to rate his Pavatars on his own. However, implementations should help the webmaster to deal with that issue.

The biggest advantage is the decentralisation. Nobody can collect data about one's habits on the internet, and sell it.

How to enable a Pavatar

A Pavatar must be a 80x80 px in either PNG, JPG or GIF format and not bigger than 12kB. There are three ways to enable a pavatar:
