Pearl City, Boca Raton, Florida

Encyclopedia : P : PE : PEA : Pearl City, Boca Raton, Florida

Pearl City is a small neighborhood in Boca Raton, Florida. It was an African American town established to segregate the employees of the hotels in Boca Raton itself, West Palm Beach, and Palm Beach from the white citizens and tourists of Boca Raton. There is little evidence on the origin of the name, but one theory is that it is named for the Hawaiian Pearl pineapple, a major crop of the area. In 2004, the small neighborhood streets were resurfaced and the neighborhood was declared as a historical district in the National Register of Historical Places.

There is a memorial dedicated to Martin Luther King on its outskirts.
