Pedder Street (畢打街) is a major street located in the core of the Central on the Hong Kong Island of Hong Kong. It begins south in Queen's Road Central, crossing Des Voeux Road Central, and ends in Connaught Road Central.
History
The road was named after Lieutenant Thomas Pedder of Royal Navy, the first Harbour Master in the Hong Kong Government. In 1863, at the junction with Queen's Road Central was erects a Pedder Street Clock Tower. With clock and fire alarm, the clock tower was the landmark of Central. The tower was demolished in 1908. In early colonial days, the street gathered trading companies of Dent, Lane Crawford and Jardine-Matheson. The General Post Office was also sited at the street. In 1867, Dent & Co. closed and was replaced by a six-storey Hongkong Hotel, the highest building at that time. The hotel was destructed in a fire in 1926. The land fell into Hongkong Land and became Gloucester House. In 1980s, the building was replaced by The Landmark.
In order to build the Pedder Station (present-day Central Station) of MTR, the General Post Office was moved to Connaught Place and the old building was demolished. The World Wide House was erected instead. The Pedder House built in 1924 is well preserved.
