People!
Encyclopedia : P : PE : PEO : People!
People! were a rock music band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in San Jose, California in 1968, it was one of the many groups from that period to join the Jesus movement, or Jesus People. Lead singer Larry Norman and his band People! opened for secular groups like The Grateful Dead, The Doors, Janis Joplin, The Byrds and many others.
They were first signed to Capitol Records, releasing their first album, I Love You, in 1968. Both the album and the single "I Love You" (written by Chris White and originally released by The Zombies in 1965) appeared on the charts, the single making the US Top 20. The band changed labels several times, releasing singles first with Capitol and then with Paramount. Two more albums were released, the second with Capital and the third with Paramount. Achieveing no further success, the group disbanded in 1971.
Norman has claimed that their 1968 debut album I Love You influenced Pete Townshend and The Who's concept album Tommy.
