Encyclopedia : P : PE : PEO : People's Alliance

The People's Alliance is the English name of several political parties in various nations.

Spain

The People's Alliance (in Spanish Alianza Popular) was a conservative political party in Spain, formed by a group of General Franco's partisans after his death and consequent restoration of democracy. Led by Manuel Fraga, a former minister under Franco, the Alliance was the main opposition party to the Socialist government in the mid-1980s, but was generally viewed as too reactionary to win a presidential election. Said circumstance led in the late 1980's to the refoundation of the party as the People's Party (in Spanish Partido Popular), with the addition of several small Christian democratic parties and the remnants of the Democratic Center Union.

Belgium

The People's Alliance (in Dutch Volksunie) was also a Belgian political party. Around 2001, it split up into the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie and Spirit.
