Perichondrium

The perichondrium is a layer of dense connective tissue which surrounds the cartilage. It consists of two separate layers; the outer fibrous layer and the inner chondrogenic layer :
- The fibrous layer contains fibroblasts, which can produce collagenous fibers.
- The chondrogenic layer remains undifferentiated and can form chondroblasts or chondrocytes.
