Encyclopedia : P : PE : PEU : Peugeot 304

The Peugeot 304 was a compact automobile produced by the French manufacturer Peugeot between 1969 and 1980.

The 304 was introduced in September 1969. It was based on the Peugeot 204 and shared many components, the most obvious difference being the frontal styling. It had a four cylinder 1288cc engine (XL3) with S versions sporting a twin choke carburettor (XL3S). Later models had a 1290cc displacement (XL5/XL5S). A diesel engine was also available. The model was available as a four-door sedan, estate/station wagon, two-door coupe, convertible and van. It was moderately advanced for its time, having fully independent suspension, all alloy overhead camshaft engine, four speed gearbox sharing the same oil as the engine, front disc rear drum brakes and headlights that could adjust for left/right hand drive.

The 304 remained in production until 1980, when it was discontinued, after 1,178,425 examples were built.
