Philippines campaign, 1944-45

Encyclopedia : P : PH : PHI : Philippines campaign, 1944-45

The Philippine Campaign was the name given to the Allied effort to retake the Philippine Islands from Japanese forces in World War II. General Douglas MacArthur's forces landed on Leyte island in the south eastern Philippines on 20 October 1944, beginning the campaign to re-take the Philippines. The island was brought under Allied control by the middle of December 1944, so that on the morning of January 9, 1945 at Lingayen Gulf the main northern island of Luzon could be invaded. This was one of the largest operations of World War II, involving more than 164 ships, 3000 landing craft and nearly 280,000 American troops. Japanese forces did not challenge the landing. General Tomoyuki Yamashita envisioned an area defense from northern Luzon. Yamashita concentrated covering forces in 4-5 strongpoints to allow the main force to withdraw north. One of the strongpoints was Cabanatuan.
