Phillip (postcode 2606) is a suburb in the Canberra, Australia district of Woden. It is located in the centre of the district, and contains the district's main commercial centre, Woden Town Centre. The suburb is named after Captain Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales. The suburb was gazetted on May 12, 1966. Streets in Phillip are named after early colonial pioneers.
As the commercial and geographical centre of Woden, Phillip contains many of the district's key facilities. As well as the Woden Town Centre, which includes the Westfield Woden shopping centre and an ACTION bus interchange, it has its own commercial area near Townshend Street, which includes Colbee Court and Dundas Court. The Southside campus of the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) is located in the suburb, as is Edison Park and the Woden Cemetery. Phillip also contains a number of sporting facilities, including the Phillip Enclosed Oval and several playing fields. The suburb adjoins the suburbs of Chifley, Curtin, Garran, Hughes, Lyons, O'Malley, Mawson and Pearce. It is bounded by Melrose Drive and Yamba Drive.
Swinger Hill
The neighbourhood of Swinger Hill is also located in Phillip. It is often seen as a separate suburb or as part of nearby Mawson, because it is located away from the rest of Phillip, on the other side of Hindmarsh and Athllon Drive. The Swinger Hill development was built in the 1970s, some years after Phillip itself, as a suburb of mixed townhouses. Deakin Volcanics green-grey and purple rhyodacite in the west half and south east corner. Deakin Volcanics coarse dark purple rhyodacite under the cemetery area, and Deakin Volcanics purple and green tuff around Hindmarsh Drive east side. A small strip of Yarralumla Formation is just to the west of Easty Street.
