Philosophers (Metal Gear)

Encyclopedia : P : PH : PHI : Philosophers (Metal Gear)

The Philosophers are a fictional illuminati-like organization in the videogames ' and '.

Background

The Philosophers consist of select people from America, China and the Soviet Union, described as "the true holders of power" in those nations. They are involved in every aspect of every war, and all are in positions of power and importance. The last of the original members died in the 1930s, and as a result the organization began to fall apart. After the end of World War II, the Philosophers began to fight amongst themselves, and the world was "torn apart." The Philosophers would start pointless conflicts to keep the masses in line.

The key means through which the Philosophers would restore order to the world was the Philosopher's Legacy. This sum was stolen by the father of Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin, and consequently the different nations started to compete to recover it. Eventually, the US branch of the Philosophers succeeded.

One of the charter members was the father of The Boss. In 1962, the Philosophers sent The Boss on a mission to Tselinoyarsk. During the mission, The Boss was forced to kill The Sorrow. In 1970 the American branch of the Philosophers split from the rest of the Philosophers and became the Patriots.

Philosophers' Legacy

The Philosopher's Legacy is a sum of approximately $100,000,000,000.00 (one hundred billion dollars) divided and hidden in banks all over the world. It was established by the three great world powers, America, China, and the Soviet Union, during the two world wars. It was to be used after the war to reunite the world. However, one of the people in charge of the Legacy, a Russian officer named Boris Volgin, obscured the information about the Legacy's location, and kept the truth for himself.

He later passed it on to his son, Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin, who used it to build his fortress Groznyj Grad and to privately fund military projects including the Shagohod. The data containing the locations of the money was re-acquired by agents of the American branch of the Philosophers in 1970, and as a result the American branch left the rest of the Philosophers the same year and changed its name to "the Patriots".
