Encyclopedia : P : PH : PHO : Photophobia

Photophobia (also light sensitivity) is a symptom of excessive sensitivity to light and the aversion to sunlight or well-lit places. Patients with photophobia usually seek the shelter of a dark room.

Causes

Patients may develop photophobia as a result of several different medical conditions, related to the eye or the nervous system. Those experiencing photophobia of acute onset are often advised to see a physician as soon as possible as this could be a sign of meningitis.

Other common disorders which lead to photophobia are migraines, encephalitis, conjunctivitis, aphakia, and iritis.

Anticholinergic drugs may cause photophobia by paralyzing the iris sphincter muscle.

In mythology
