Piano Concerto No. 4 (Prokofiev)

Encyclopedia : P : PI : PIA : Piano Concerto No. 4 (Prokofiev)

Overview

Sergey Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 4 in B-flat Minor, Op. 53 for the left hand was commissioned by the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein and completed in 1931. As the latter however never himself played the work publicly, this is the only one of Prokofiev's complete piano concertos that never saw a performance during the composers lifetime. It is less dense in sound than the other four, but holds particular difficulties for the pianist. Like the second, the fourth piano concerto has four movements:

  1. Vivace (4-5 min)
  2. Andante (12-13 min)
  3. Moderato (8-9 min)
  4. Vivace (1-2 min)
The first and last movement are of a jokey character, the concerto has a most unusual end, a pianissimo run up to B-flat7. The andante is more reflective and expands with greatness rather than taking the listener by surprise. However, despite its romanticism it does not lack irony. The sarcastic Moderato has been described as a "modified version of sonata-form". It, too, has a particularly idiosyncratic end.
