Encyclopedia : P : PI : PIA : Piano Sonata No. 24 (Beethoven)

The Piano Sonata No. 24 in F-sharp major, Opus 78, nicknamed "A Thérèse" was written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1809. It consists of two movements:

A typical performance takes 10 minutes.

The most commonly displayed title for the peice is "Fur Elise." This is incorrect. Many rumors have circulated about the reason for this mistake, the most common being that the title had worn off by the time someone found it, and they misinterpreted the worn print. The actual title is "A Thérèse," which in French means, "For Thérèse."

Romain Rolland wrote that Thérèse von Brunsvik was in love with and engaged to Beethoven in the year of 1806. Beethoven had a portrait of Thérèse.
