Piracy Funds Terrorism
Encyclopedia : P : PI : PIR : Piracy Funds Terrorism
Piracy Funds Terrorism is the first volume in a proposed series of mixtapes featuring UK genre-bending rap artist M.I.A. and Philadelphia-based DJ Diplo. The mixtape was initially only given to the press and handed out at early live shows, but because of the album's huge underground success, Turntablelab.com began releasing the mixtape exclusively through their website around December, 2004. The mixtape added to the already building hype of M.I.A.'s debut album and also forced people to acknowledge the mixtape subculture in general. It also established M.I.A.'s growing fanbase within the music and mp3-sharing blogosphere.

Later pressings
The first pressing of "Piracy Funds Terrorism" had an incorrect track listing, confusing many. This was corrected in the second issue of the album. However a sample used in the third track of the mixtape caused legal problems, so on the third pressing, Diplo replaced it with M.I.A.'s "Pull Up the People". He also remixed the "M.I.A./Cutty Ranks" track for unknown reasons, replacing the original samples with a mash-up of the Cutty Ranks a capella and Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot".
