Encyclopedia : P : PI : PIT : Pitot-static system
A pitot-static system is an avionics component which directs impact pressure from a Pitot tube and static air pressure into the appropriate flight instruments. The system allows a pilot to know an aircraft's airspeed, Mach number, altitude, and altitude trend.
Pitot - static related disasters
- 06 February 1996 - Birgenair flight 301 crashes shortly after takeoff due to the static ports being blocked and thus causing the system to provide incorrect altitude and airspeed data
- 02 October 1996 - AeroPeru Flight 603 crashes because of the exact same problem with Birgenair 301
