Pizza Express is a chain of pizza restaurants originating in the United Kingdom. Its commercial formula has been a combination of stylishly-designed eateries with relatively low prices. The chain was founded in 1965 by Peter Boizot: the first restaurant opened in Wardour Street in London with a pizza oven and chef imported from Italy. The chain expanded, initially as a franchise operation, and by 2005 there are more than 300 restaurants in the UK and Ireland, where it is branded as Milano. There are also some 18 restaurants in Spain, France, Greece and Cyprus, mostly branded as Pizza Marzano.
Pizza Express branded pizzas and doughballs are also available to buy in shops.
Much of the recent growth in the chain came while it was run by Luke Johnson.
