Pleuron

Pleuron is a Greek word ("pleura" is the plural form).

In zoological morphology, it describes at least two different structures:

(1) the tergum of a crustacean when it overhangs the insertion of the limb on each side as a free plate
(2) the lateral portion of a segment of an insect thorax; the pleura typically have points of articulation for both the leg bases (coxae) and wing bases.

In Antiquity, it was the name of a prominent city state of Old Aetolia, which was the birth place of the author Alexander Aetolos.
