Town in Belgium. Ploegsteert has a Carpentry Museum[link].

Twinned with Wolverton, England in 2006; this was partly initiated through the finding of letters[link] from a 16 year old soldier from Wolverton called Albert French.

World War 1

The nearby Ploegsteert Wood was the site of early battles in the Great War. Ploegsteert was nicknamed "Plug Street" by the British soldiers. Winston Churchill stayed here from January to May 1916[link]. The Ploegsteert Memorial commemorates more than 11,000 British and South African Servicemen who died in the area during the First World War who have no known grave.
