Plymouth was the capital of Montserrat, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom.
After a volcanic eruption in 1995 by the Soufriere Hills volcano, the city was devastated and abandoned. Government buildings are now located at Brades though Plymouth remains the de jure capital since no new capital has been formally created.
