It was formerly registered under the Workplace Relations Act 1996 on 1 January 1998 . The Canberra office was opened by the Prime Minister of Australia the Hon John Howard, MP on Tuesday, 16 September 2003.

The members of each State, Territory and Federal Police Association / Union are members of the Police Federation of Australia.
