Martinique is not a separate teritory but both an overseas region and overseas department of France, with the same government institutions as areas on the French mainland.

The administrative centre is Fort-de-France.

The Prefect of Martinique is Yves Dassonville (since 2004)

(45 seats; members are elected by popular vote to serve six-year terms)

The President of the General Council is Claude Lise (since 22 March 1992)

Seats by party - left-wing candidates 13, PPM 11, Rally for the Republic 6, right-wing candidates 5, PCM 3, Union for French Democracy 3, PMS 2, independents 2; note - the PPM won a plurality

(41 seats; members are elected by popular vote to serve six-year terms)

The President of the Regional Council is Alfred Marie-Jeanne (since March 1998)
