Pontiac 2+2

Encyclopedia : P : PO : PON : Pontiac 2+2

Introduced for the 1964 model year, the Pontiac 2+2 automobile was a sporty edition of the popular full size Catalina series. It featured bucket seats and console as standard equipment, as well as 2+2 badging inside and out.

As a full size model, the 2+2 was available with Pontiac's big-block 421 cubic inch V8 engine, as well as the slightly smaller 389. Buyers could choose one of three transmissions: a 3- or 4-speed manual, or Turbo-Hydramatic automatic. Like its cousin the Chevrolet Impala Super Sport, the 2+2 was only available as a hardtop coupe or convertible.

Sales were disappointing, since most Pontiac sporty-car buyers preferred the popular midsize GTO or the shinier Bonneville. Although this model was phased out in the US after 1967, the 2+2 continued to be sold in Canada through 1969. Canadian Pontiacs in this era were built on full size Chevrolet platforms, so the Canadian 2+2 cars could be ordered with one of serveral Chevrolet V8 engines, including a 350 small block, or 396 and 427 cubic inch "Mark IV" big-blocks.
