Poochie is the diminutive form of pooch, and always refers to a dog and not a cat. The word pussy (as in pussycat) refers to a cat, and never a dog. Most dictionaries state that these two words are of uncertain origin.

Poochie in Peanuts

Poochie is a female character in the comic strip Peanuts who debuted on January 7, 1973. Her first appearance was reprinted in the collection Thompson is in Trouble, Charlie Brown. Poochie was a blonde girl who played with Snoopy when he was younger. She is said to have been the first to call Charlie Brown by his full name. Snoopy held a long-standing grudge against Poochie for choosing another dog at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm over him and never coming to visit him again afterwards.

Poochie the 1980's Toy

Poochie was a popular Mattel toy in the 1980s, a white dog with pink ears and paws that wore a pair of purple sunglasses and could do extraordinary things, such as drive a car and speak. Usually appearing as a stuffed doll or a plastic figurine with brushable ears, her line of merchandise also extended to books, stationary sets, overnight kits and bedding. There was also a televised series, special and movie.

Poochie is the name of a supposedly-cool dog character on The Itchy & Scratchy Show in the TV series The Simpsons. In the episode Poochie is voiced by Homer Simpson, who is in turn voiced by Dan Castellaneta.

Everyone hated the new character, however. To kill him off, he was revealed to be an alien whose home planet needed him, but died on the way back home.
