Popalzai: Implies son of Popal. A name given to the descendants of Popal.

Popal: An Afghan chief who lived about 700 years ago; was the father of one of the most prominent of Abdali tribes. According to Afghan oral history; Popal the son of Zirak was a descendant of Abdal the son of Tarin. Tarin had three sons, namely: Spin, Tor and Abdal. Sadozais are descendants of Popal.

Abdal: A prominent leader of Afghans by his own right. The father of the Afghan tribes; popalzai and Barakzai. Desendants of Abdal are known as Abdalis. The term Durrani is also used for Abdalis. The two most prominent Durrani tribes; Sadozai and Barakzai ruled Afganistan starting from the first Sadozai King Ahmed Shah Abdali, who establised his rule in 1747 till the late 20th Century when King Zahir Shah (A Barakzai Durrani) was exiled to Rome in 1973 and the Communist took over Afghanistan a few years later.
