Popara

Encyclopedia : P : PO : POP : Popara

Popara (Serbian Cyrillic, Bulgarian Cyrillic, Macedonian Cyrillic: попара) is a meal made with left over or fresh bread.

Products:

One- or two-day-old or fresh bread (Italian or French, with a thick crust), milk or water, butter, a teaspoon of sugar, and kajmak or sirene.

A recipe:

Boil the milk or water. Cut the bread into cubes, then mix with the boiling milk or water. Cook for only few minutes until the bread gets moist, but make sure it doesn't burn. Making bulgarian popara doesn't require the boiling of the two together but simply pouring the hot milk (or water) over the bread. Warm a spoonful of pork lard or kajmak and pour over the popara. To make bulgarian popara, simply top with feta cheese (sirene), add a small slice of butter and a teaspoon of sugar after mixing the hot water and bread. Mix well.

The popara or simply popara is a traditional kids' breakfast meal.

This meal is mostly made in Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia.
