Popcorn makers are very different to the large commercial Popcorn popper seen at fairs and carnivals.
Different types of popcorn maker work in different ways; some models use hot air, which avoids the use of oil, and is therefore a healthier option. Or you can opt for a popcorn maker that pops using oil, depending on your personal preference.
