The UDEUR part of the name commemorates its earlier title Unione Democratici per l'Europa (Democratic Union for Europe), that was its name till November 2003. From November 2003 to November 2004 it was known as Alleanza Popolare-UDEUR (Popular Alliance-UDEUR).

The new-born party joins the new centre-left party-alliance denominated Daisy is Freedom a coalition which obtains 15% of the votes. However the new alliance becomes a single party and Mastella decides not to join. In the european elections UDEUR obtains substancial results electing 2 MEPs. It's electoral strong point is in Campania where Mastella comes from. In fact in the regional elections of 2005 it obtained aroud 17% of the votes in Campania.

Udeur, in the person of Mastella is really critical towards the cabinet of Silvio Berlusconi doing a strong and tough opposition. Mastella decides to keep the party in the centre-left coaltion although having contrast with the laical and liberal policies of the new political project Rose in the Fist. In fact the party remains in the political sphere of the centre but it's policies are thinly compatible with the centre-left caolition.

At the general elections of April 2006, UDEUR presents itself individually but in a political alliance of The Union. It obtains 1,4% of the votes electing 10 deputies and 3 senators. The Union wins and Romano Prodi forms his second cabinet where Mastella becomes Minister of the Justice.
