Encyclopedia : P : PO : POR : Port district

Port Authority redirects here. See also: Port Authority Bus Terminal.
In the United States a port district is a type of special-purpose district formed by residents of an area to create and support economic development within that area. Port districts are generally governed by directly elected commissions, frequently called "the Port Authority'''".

In addition to owning land and levying taxes, port districts can also operate shipping terminals, airports, railroads, and irrigation facilities.
