Portlethen is a suburban town situated seven miles south of Aberdeen, Scotland along the A90. It has expanded rapidly over the last two decades. Portlethen has a population of about seven thousand with a mix of housing sizes.
Geography
The town is protected by Green Belt to the north and south, including the recreational resource of Portlethen Moss, once home to the Great Crested Newt. Much of Portlethen has been built over Portlethen Moss. The remainder of Portlethen Moss is approximately half the size it was twenty years ago.
To the east of Portlethen lie the three original fishing villages on the coast - Findon, Portlethen Village and Downies. Fishing gradually died out in these villages as the industry became centralised in Aberdeen, and mostly vanished after the discovery of oil in the North Sea.
Community facilities in Portlethen include tennis courts, a bowling green with pubilc and private sessions, a swimming pool, a railway platform, 2 main parks, a community centre and a golf course. There is a new Youth Drop-In Centre being built.
There are over 800 houses being built across the A90 from Portlethen.
Leisure
Eating out in Portlethen is possible by visiting the Ashvale Fish Restaraunt, or the several pubs in the area. Take away meals are available from Indian, Chinese and Pizza outlets on the two small shopping centres, The Green, which has about 20 outlets, and Rowanbank Court, which has 4 shops.
Portlethen also has a retail park, containing 5 shops. There is a Hombase DIY store, a Matalan retail outlet, an Argos Extra, a General George Carpets shop and an ASDA supermarket.
There are two main parks in Portlethen: Bourtree Park and Nicol Park. Nicol Park has a small toddlers park, a skate park and 2 basketball courts. Bourtree Park has a football pitch and a few swings and climbing frames.
There are two primary schools and one secondary school in Portlethen. A new secondary school building, built with private money and leased back to the Council, is due to open for the new school session on 22nd August 2006. It shall include a library, community centre and other facilities within it.
