Posidoniaceae

Encyclopedia : P : PO : POS : Posidoniaceae

Posidoniaceae is the botanical name of a family of flowering plants. Such a family has been recognized by only few taxonomists.

The APG II system, of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, of 1998), also recognizes such a family and places it in the order Alismatales, in the clade monocots. The family includes a single genus Posidonia which contains a few species only: these are marine plants ("seagrass"), found in the seas of the Mediterranean and around the south coast of Australia.

According to the [AP-Website] the family is doubtfully distinct: the plants in the three families Cymodoceaceae, Posidoniaceae and Ruppiaceae form a monophyletic group.
