Power brake

Encyclopedia : P : PO : POW : Power brake

A power brake is an electronic device used in conjunction with guitar amplifiers. It is in affect an attenuator. It provides control of the level between the amplifier and speaker without altering the dynamic feel and tone of the signal. Most tube amps produce natural distortion when set to high volume levels, however, the amount of volume coming from the speakers at these settings is usually too loud for modern stage or rehearsal room setups. To solve this problem, a power brake is used to reduce the sound volume of the speakers whilst keeping the desired distorted tone coming from the over-driven amp.
