Prefectura Naval Argentina (Argentine Naval Prefecture; PNA) is an Argentine paramilitary state organism charged with protecting the country's rivers and territorial sea/ocean. It is the equivlent of other countries Coast Guards.

History

Officially integrated into the Argentine government in June of 1810.

Falklands war

The PNA had a minor role and saw battle during the Falklands War.

The PNA is structurally dependent of the Ministry of Interior. The current prefect in charge of the PNA is Prefecto General Carlos Edgardo Fernandez, followed by the Subprefecto Prefecto General Ricardo Rodriguez

Facilities

The Prefectura's main facility is located in the Edificio Guardacostas in 235 E. Madero Avenue, Buenos Aires.

Zones

The PNA is divided by 10 zones of control.
  1. Alto Paraná (prefectures of Posadas, Iguazú, San Javier, Itá Ibaté, Ituzaingó, Libertador Gral. San Martín and Eldorado)
  2. Alto Uruguay
  3. Paraná Superior and Paraguay (prefectures of Corrientes, Formosa, Barranqueras, Pilcomayo, Reconquista, Goya, Paso de la Patria e Itatí)
  4. Lower Uruguay (prefectures of Concepción del Uruguay, Gualeguaychú, Colón, Concordia, Salto Grande and Federación)
  5. Lower Paraná
  6. Delta
  7. River plate
  8. North Argentine Sea
  9. South Argentine Sea
  10. Lacustre and Comahu

Fleet

PNA's fleet of vessels, aircraft and helicopters is composed of:

Illegal fishing

The Prefectura is constantly battling illegal fishing vessels in the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEE), mostly from eastern countries. The Navy also collaborates in detection of such ships with their P-3 Orion maritime surveillance aircraft.
