Encyclopedia : P : PR : PRE : Prequel trilogy (Star Wars)
The prequel trilogy (commonly abbreviated PT by fans) is a term often used to describe the three films of the Star Wars whose events take place before the original trilogy.
Plot summary
The three films center on the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker, the person prophecized by the Jedi Order to bring balance to the force. Palpatine, the Senator of Naboo, is secretly the Dark Lord of the Sith known as Darth Sidious. As Darth Sidious, he organises an attack on Naboo in order that Palpatine may be raised to Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, and also initiates the return of the Sith with his apprentice, Darth Maul. Two Jedi Knights sent to Naboo discover Anakin Skywalker, and he is believed to be the Chosen One of prophecy who will destroy the Sith. Darth Maul is killed by Obi-Wan, and Palpatine starts to set his eyes on turning Anakin to the dark side of the Force. Darth Sidious organises a movement of separatism from the Republic and a clone army for the Republic with which to fight the separatists. The war having begun, the Jedi agree to use the clone army, and the Senate grants Palpatine sweeping emergency powers for waging the Clone Wars. Anakin Skywalker, having fallen in love with and marrying Padmé Amidala, the former queen of Naboo, fears that she may die in childbirth and vows to do anything to stop her death. Palpatine uses his fear to lure him to the dark side, telling him he can learn the ability to keep a person from dying. When Anakin tells Mace Windu that Palpatine is the Sith Lord they have long been looking for, a group of Jedi Masters set out to arrest the Chancellor and nearly execute him, but Anakin saves his life at the last moment out of his fear that he should lose any chance of saving his wife. Anakin subsequently falls to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader, then carries out Palpatine's orders to exterminate the Jedi order. His mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, tries to persuade Anakin back to the light, but Anakin is not persuaded and believes the Jedi to be an evil group that is hypocritical to their own beliefs. The two fight a ferocious duel, ending with Obi-Wan as the victor as he sliced off both of Anakin's limbs and one of his arms; this event forced Anakin into a black life support suit. His wife, brokenhearted by the path Anakin has taken, dies after bearing twins, Luke and Leia, who are separated to hide them from their father and the Emperor.
