Prestonsburg is a city located in Floyd County in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Kentucky on the banks of the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. It was founded in 1797 by Col. John Preston--for whom it was named--along with Solomon Stratton, Matthias Harman and Andrew Hood. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,612. It is the county seat of Floyd County[Geographic references#6GR6].
Education
Floyd County's public schools are operated by Floyd County Schools. The city is also home to Prestonburg Community College.Culture
Prestonburg is the location of the [Mountain Arts Center], which hosts music concerts and is home to the Kentucky Opry.[Middle Creek National Battlefield] is the site of the largest and most significant Civil War battle (January 10, 1862) that took place in Eastern Kentucky.
Also located in Prestonsburg is the Samuel May House Living History Museum. It is the oldest existent brick home remaining in the Big Sandy Valley. It was built by Samuel May in 1817. During the American Civil War it was utilized by the Confederate forces as a recruiting station. The 5th Kentucky Infantry CSA and 10th Kentucky Calvary was organized at this location. The Samuel May House was utilized as a residence until 1981. In 1992 it was donated to the City of Prestonsburg and restored as a Living History Museum. See http://www.mayhouse.org
