Pride goes before a fall is an abbreviation of an ancient saying, or Proverb, designed to warn that often excessive pride will inevitably cause one to fall or fail. Essentially, the tendency of excessive pride, or Hubris, to encourage one to assume abilities based on supposed success at other possibly, unrelated activities.

An abbreviation of Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." (King James Version)
