Primal (video game)

Encyclopedia : P : PR : PRI : Primal (video game)

Primal is an action PlayStation 2 video game developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe aka Studio Cambridge. It tells the story of Jennifer Tate, an orphan teenage girl searching for her boyfriend in a dimension of demons. As the story develops we discover more about Jen's past and her link to her boyfriend and the demon worlds. The richly developed demon realms give the scenery the effect of being important, while the music by 16Volt provides action scenes with dramatic and well timed background.

History

Primal is about a young girl known as Jen, a half-demon (also known as a Hybrid) who is sucked into the "Nexus". Throughout the game, she is transported to four very different demon realms, which are unknown to those from "Mortalis", the realm of Humans. The story of the game consists of a young, orphaned woman and her boyfriend (Lewis) who are attacked outside a night club by a large demon. The two of them end up in hospital. A small stone effigy who calls himself "Scree" comes into the hospital, separates Jen's soul from her unconscious body, and takes her into the Nexus, a meeting point for the four realms of "Oblivion". Jen is told that the lord of chaos "Abbadon" has gone power mad and is trying to take control of the two realms of order controlled by "Arella" the goddess of order. In the Nexus lives Chronos, part of an ancient machine known as the Oracle, which channels the primal energy from each of the four realms of Oblivion to Arella and Abbadon. Chronos, generally thought to be immortal, has governed with impartiality, channelling balanced strength to them both, but Abbadon's plans draw all of the primal energy to his side, starving Arella of her very existence. The four realms are Solum, Aquis, Aetha and Volca, each with their own different types of species of demonic beast creatures.

Creature

Ferai

These are strong and violent hunters. They are very animalistic, with horns and large, bulky muscles. Despite their primitive nature, they live in a well ordered and structured society. The king rules over the society, and at the height of his power, must sacrifice himself and pass his lineage onto his heir.

Their world is Solum, a world where it is always night and eternal winter. They are aligned to Arella.

Undine

They are what can only be described as merpeople. They have no legs and cannot breathe on land. However, they are intelligent and strong, communicating through a form of telepathy. They are ruled over by a monarchy.

Their waters are naturally poisonous to the Undine and hold many dangers, but the Undine have constructed a very complex system of substations which are connected to a giant purification tower, which makes it easier for them to live.

Their world is Aquis, a world where it is always sunset, and eternal autumn. They are aligned to Arella.

Wraith

These are vicious and deceitful creatures. Their skin is stretched tightly over their bones, and they practice a "time-shifting" technique, which allows them to move very quickly. There are two forms of this; one is a simple dodge, and the other slows down the world around Jen, but letting her move as if normally.

Their society is divided into lower class peasants, who live in tudor-esque buildings in a nearby village, and upper class aristocrats, who live in large mansions.

Their world is Aetha, a world of mountains and constant rainfall which denotes eternal spring (Although it is not a very sunny or green place at all). They are aligned to Abbadon.

Djinn

They are violent, merciless and very powerful creatures. Their skin is very metallic, and at full strength, they can have almost godlike powers. Their strength is dependant on the activity of the volcano they live in. When it is dormant, so are they, but when it is active, they are at their strongest. Like the Ferai and Undine, they are ruled over by a King and Queen. The difference is that the Djinn royalty have internal conflicts and power struggles, namely that between the King and Queen.

Their world is Volca, a world where it is always midday, and eternal summer. They are strongly aligned to Abbadon.
